Winter is the coldest season of the year, winter in Bulgaria is associated with snow and freezing temperatures, but also with the End of the Year Celebrations, family time and long nights.
But long nights and cold days doesn’t mean that people cant have great fun during this beautiful season.
Today we have prepared a few ideas for you to try this winter:
1- Sledding down a hill
All Bulgarian kids enjoy having a good sledding day, this is the time of the year when kids take their parents up to the hill to have a good old fashion fun.
This makes us remember that we can go outside and spend a whole day all the family together and forget for a while about the technology that surrounds us.
You don’t need to travel to a ski resort are for Sledding, since many mountains cross Bulgaria it won’t be difficult for you to find a suitable place if you still don’t know where to ask your Bulgarian neighbor and they will able to recommends you a beautiful place!
2- Visit the traditional Christmas Markets
One of the favorite places to feel the Christmas spirit in Bulgaria are the open-air Christmas markets even isn’t an old tradition in Bulgaria.
During the last years have been gaining popularity and now you can find an open-air Christmas market in many towns, is an excellent opportunity visit it with family or friends, and have a relaxed afternoon, don’t forget to dress according to the season.
3- Skiing in one of the Ski resorts
There are three main ski resorts in Bulgaria, plus a few smaller. The closest to Sofia is Borovets, the country’s oldest ski resort.
An hour further away is Bansko, Set in the scenic Pirin National Park; it’s Bulgaria’s most modern resort with fast lifts, the best snow record and most extended ski season.
Then there’s Pamporovo in the east, a 1.5-hour transfer from Plovdiv. It’s a quieter, more family-friendly resort.
4- New Year open-air Concerts and fireworks
Many towns around Bulgaria have concerts to celebrate the arriving of the new year, people go to the square, and a stage is prepared where a show is performed live for the attendants, and as a tradition at midnight a fireworks show takes place, and the celebrations continue until late hours.
The new year is a family celebration then you will see many families and even small kids having fun and enjoying the show.
5- Enjoy in one of the many Spa resorts with hot mineral pools for the winter season
Bulgaria is rich in mineral springs – it has over 700 across the country. So this pleasure is quite accessible to the people and most of the regions have at least one hot water spring near.
You can find a well develop 5 stars hotels with all the extra services and amenities to make you feel like a king or queen, but also you can find hot mineral water pools with great water that you can go for the day and at a fraction of the price.
6- Make a Snowman
If there is something that kids have fun doing during the winter is to make a Snowman, and you don’t really need any special skills or materials to start doing it, just snow and your hands.
You can try many different options in this old tradition, nobody really knows who start doing a snowman, but some research told us that it was a tradition already during the middle ages.
7- Take the Cross from the water in Jordanov Den
This is only for the bravest ones, on January 6- is the day of one of the most ancient Bulgarian traditions.
The original interpretation is; God came down to Earth, whilst Jesus Christ was being baptized by John the Baptist in the River Jordan and pronounced him His son.
Then nowadays the celebration starts, when the people jump into the freezing waters to recover the cross that is thrown by the priest, the tradition says that the one that recovers the cross will be blessed for the whole year!
Now you know that the winter season isn’t an excuse to don’t have fun and go outside, just wear warm clothes and enjoy the opportunity to have quality family time!
