Today in Expats Stories, we want to share with all of you the Bulgarian Experience of Rhyes Douglas, or how it’s better know in Bulgaria, the YouTuber “Jamal In BG“.

Name and nationality:

My name is Rhyes (Or Jamal from JamalinBG) and I’m from the UK

Tell us a bit about you and what you do?

I enjoy trying new things and venturing down new paths, which translates itself into my work world. I teach English/work as a conversation specialist, create educational courses, trade currencies, and make YouTube videos. The videos being my current passion and what I see myself doing in the future.

Why and when did you come to Bulgaria?

I moved to Bulgaria 3 years ago with no specific aim in mind. I had a business partner from Bulgaria who suggested Bulgaria as a great mix between cost, culture, and quality of life. I was a digital nomad of sorts with no plans to settle down, however, things changed once I moved here. One month became two, became three, became four, eventually becoming 3 years haha.

What do you like about your country of origin?

People are a little more polite in the UK. Which is a double-edged sword as you’re not always sure if they are being honest to you. I also like how most towns (aside the largest few) are very clean, green and safe.

What are some differences between the UK and Bulgaria?

As mentioned in the previous question people tend to be more straight forward and honest in Bulgaria. It takes some time to get used to, however once you realise it’s just a more forward mentality, it is quite refreshing. There is more of a connection to nature here (bloody good weather too!).

What do you like about Bulgaria?

The blend between city and nature. High-quality food (and health) is extremely important to me and Bulgaria has unmatched access to quality grass-fed/pasture-raised meat, unpasteurized dairy, raw honey, and wonderful organic fruits and veggies (when in season).

What was the most dificult bureocratic procedure you have undergone so far in Bulgaria?

Honestly, I haven’t experienced any difficulties so far. My girlfriend is Bulgarian so anytime I needed to fill some papers etc she helped me out

Mention one important experience you’ve had in Bulgaria :

Meeting my girlfriend’s parents and experiencing Bulgarian hospitality was one of the most important experiences for me. Just realizing I had nothing to worry about and BG is a place where I’m welcome. The amount of love I get on my Youtube channel is also pretty important.

If you have the chance to change something in Bulgaria, what it will be?

Aesthetics. I’d focus on improving how clean and green the cities are as I believe it’d allow people to have more pride in the country and condition. This would subsequently manifest into a healthier and happier country overall.

What languages do you speak other than your mother tongue?

Bulgarian (Basic), German (Basic), Chinese (Intermediate), Korean (Intermediate). I enjoy learning languages and would love to learn 10+ languages eventually.

What countries have you been to?

Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, Greece, France, Spain, Germany, Hungary, Turkey, North Macedonia, Kosovo. Few more however not for too long/memories of them are fuzzy.

How is your business going?

It’s going great at the moment. I plan to slowly shift to full-time Youtube though. That’ll take some time however I’m excited about it.

What advice would you give to other people who would like to come to live in Bulgaria?

Join the “expat in (insert city)” groups, ask for advice, connections to agents/property vendors who are trustworthy and enjoy the journey! Don’t overthink things and try your best to assimilate here in your own unique way. The more people coming to Bulgaria to generate value the better things become so understand the process takes time and sets an example. We’re extremely blessed to be here and to experience the development of this wonderful place!

We want to thank Rhyes for taking the time to chat with us and share his thoughts and vision about his journey in Bulgaria, and don’t forget to visit his youtube channel!
