Bulgaria Trough The Lens of an Englishman

views of an Englishman in bulgaria

Today we are happy to share with all of you in Expats Stories, the experience of our new friend Glyn, who has been living in Bulgaria for many years and agree to share with all of us his thoughts and impressions of his Bulgarian life.

Name and nationality:

Glyn Thomas Jones, British

Tell us a bit about you and what you do

This is a poetic description of me

…named at birth Glyn Thomas Jones I was raised by Welsh and tamed by Dragons, I live under the influence of a man who walked into the wild.
Haunted by the allure of natured breaks and sun covered golden days, steep cliffs deep valleys and tall mountains I am a vegetarian gatherer of natural light and candid moments in time.
With an appetite and large taste of the unknown and the smell of fresh coffee. I wonder a grass paved path with an opened mind and trusting searching eyes, guided by willing size 10 feet and a desire to happily drag you with me.
From my early days drinking a fixer in the darkroom , learning the system and processing the paper white to recent trips photographing Europe and beyond, surfing the land of Bulgarian beauty, a walking odyssey through England, rock climbing in the vista of Rila lakes, or music festivals across the land and fields afar, my pursuit of new experiences pushes me to continually evolve my vision, while reminding me of the importance of carrying my camera and glass with humor, compassion and curiosity.

Why and when did you come to Bulgaria?

I sold my successful business of 30 years in the UK then moved to Bulgaria to slow down my pace of life and chill out after years of stress and work work work, money is not everything and does not always make you happy even when you have a lot of it, I had some friends in Bulgaria so it seemed like a good choice to come here

What do you like about the United Kingdom ?

What I really like about the UK is the scenery and history, we have some of the oldest history in the world, the most spectacular scenery I think in the UK is Cornwall in the south-west, north Wales and Scotland.

What are some differences between your country and Bulgaria?

The way and pace of life in Bulgaria is much slower and less stressful than in the UK, but over the years even Bulgaria especially Sofia’s pace of life is now catching up with the west

What do you like about Bulgaria?

It’s people and the scenery and also the amazing history, I am the proud owner of 2 traditional houses of National importance in Bulgaria one of them is in Medven and the other my most favorite of the 2 is in the beautiful village of Jeravna both houses date back to the very early 1800s

What was the most difficult bureaucratic procedure you have undergone so far in Bulgaria?

My expensive jeep was stolen by the mafia before Bulgaria was in the European Union and I had so much bureaucratic bullshit to cover up the corruption in stealing expensive foreigners cars

Mention one important experience you’ve had in Bulgaria

Meeting my present girlfriend we are soul mates and love each other very much

What languages do you speak other than your mother tongue?

German

What countries have you been to?

Greece, France, Spain, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Croatia, Switzerland, Austria, Serbia, Norway and many other parts of Europe

How is your business going?

I am officially retired but still have my finger in some pies as we say in English, I make money from my photography in fact I will have some of my photos at an exhibition next month June in a gallery in Barcelona Spain which I am very proud about, I also have training in Interior Design so have done work for clients on luxury kitchens and bathrooms in Sofia.

What advice would you give to other people who would like to come to live in Bulgaria?

Just follow your heart that simple.

Thank you very much Glyn for taking the time to participate and in our Expats Stories section.
