Prohodna, The Bulgarian Cave Where God’s Eyes Are

God since ancient times is usually represented in many different configurations, from flames to clouds, animals and many other forms in between.

But if you travel through northern Bulgaria and approach the province of Lovech. There, in the municipality of Lukovit famous for the Thracian treasure that was found near that locality, there is a beautiful pass called Iskar, very close to the town of Karlukovo, and in it, a mountain of limestone, where you will find the God’s Eyes

The region has been subjected to karst action for millennials, that is, the chemical weathering that produces water on certain types of rocks especially soluble in it that models the landscape and excavates underground galleries and natural grottoes until producing a characteristic landscape. In the Bulgarian case, we speak of a large cave named after Prohodna its fifty six-meter tall and reaches up to two hundred and sixty-two meters in length, and it is the largest in Bulgaria.

The place is part of the Iskar-Panega Geological Park, one of the largest karst regions in the country. Originated in the Quaternary Era, Bulgaria constitutes a true paradise for caving enthusiasts because there are almost two and a half hundred caverns registered.

But that of Prohodna cave, also known as Oknata, is special because one cannot always get into god’s eyes, the cavern in question has two huge cavities in its vault, one next to the other and with an almond-shaped shape that gives them the appearance of a pair of eyes.

there is two access to the cave (in fact, the word Prohodna  (Проходна) means entrance), are two colossal openings forty-five meters high and thirty-five each.

It is not surprising that the ancient Thracians placed one of their sanctuaries in such a peculiar scenario, inheriting the use that man had given to the cave since Neolithic times.

In any case, the Thracians have been replaced by cavers and travelers eager to contemplate, in the absence of stalactites and stalagmites, a splendid spectacle: the small waterfalls that fall through the “eyes” when it rains and that, inevitably, have created the Metaphor of divine crying . Or the fantastic night vision of the moon through these openings, at which time popular belief prompts to make three wishes with the “security” that at least one will be fulfilled. The cave is a magical place in all aspects.

Legends tell us that during the Roman Empire and the Ottoman rule, many rulers and barbarian invaders hid their gold in the cavities of the cave.

Prohodna Cave is part of the 100 national tourist sites. The cave is accessible to tourists throughout the year. No guide required. It is desirable to be careful during the cold winter days because of the large ice pendants forming around the ceiling and around the windows and the risk of slipping.

Have you visited any cave in Bulgaria? there are many and all of them very interesting!
